Sugar makes us fat and we’re getting fatter…
When we eat sugar our body deals with it in two ways:
- It burns it off as energy
- Or converts it to fat
Genetically some of us are better equipped to process sugar as energy, and then there are the rest of us who are more likely to store it as fat. (Thanks Mum)
When our pancreas detects sugar it releases a hormone called insulin to help regulate the level of sugar in our blood, the more sugar in our blood, the more insulin is released.
Because most of us are putting way too much sugar in our system, too much insulin is released causing our blood sugar to drop below normal levels. This is called hypoglycaemia, and is essentially a sugar crash causing our bodies to crave, you guessed it, EVEN MORE SUGAR!
The more this process takes place, the more severe the blood sugar spike and the more insulin is required. The result? Our bodies skip using sugar as energy and go straight to storing it as fat.
With 63% of Aussies being overweight or obese it may be time to readjust the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude on this one…
Sugar is EVERYWHERE and we know it (but pretend we don’t)
The love of sugar being the root of all evil is no new revelation, oh wait, that’s money right? However, sugar is still pretty bad and it may be surprising to learn that companies have been disguising sugar in their foods under a different name… WHAAAT! Yep, I knew money had something to do with this…
Here’s a list exposing this sneaky little substance:
- Corn Syrup Cane sugar
- Agave Nectar Fruit juice concentrates
- Honey Lactose
- Maltose Molasses
- Crystalline fructose Invert – sugar
- Glucose Dextrose
- High fructose corn syrup Fructose
Nutritional labels are required by law, so companies can use many different sweeteners to make one product tasty, call them different names and have them show up further down the list. This is sneaky, but it’s also something we’re becoming more aware of and should take the time to read the labels. These companies can lead a horse to the lolly water, but we all know it’s the horse’s choice to drink, right?
Sugar is addictive and our brains are in on it.
Our brains have sweet receptors that become over stimulated by a sugar rich diet. This over stimulation causes our brains to get exceedingly happy which can override the self-control mechanisms in our brain!

This is why we can’t think straight when we eat a Tim Tam and there’s more in the packet. When we give in to Mr Tim Tam’s brothers and sisters our brains begin to anticipate the more that’s coming and so prepares us for it. Yep. The habit feeds the brain and the brain feeds the thought and the thought is relentless and the 7 eleven completes the cycle.
There is no sugar coating the consequences.
Added sugars contain large amounts of calories and no essential nutrients. It’s a pure energy hit after hit that is killing us slowly. Confronting? Yep. But when it comes to life, I’m all for it. Good health is priority. Sugar may taste sweet and innocent but sugar is NOT our ally. Here’s why:
- Sugar causes bad bacteria in the mouth resulting in fast decaying teeth.
- Sugar causes weight gain and ages us quicker.
- Sugar is addictive.
- Sugar has no nutritional value.
- Large amounts of sugar turns to fat in the liver, and can lead to fatty liver disease.
- Too much sugar causes insulin resistance, the lead driver of Type II Diabetes.
- Due to its harmful effects on metabolism, sugar contributes to cancer.
- It not the fat, it’s the SUGAR that raises your cholesterol and gives you heart disease.
- Sugar increases your uric acid levels and puts you at risk for kidney disease.
- Research has found a powerful connection between a high-fructose diet and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
- Eating too much sugar causes metabolic syndrome.
